Messi isn't planning to leave! Romano reveals the Argentine's plans beyond 2028
Lionel Messi is not preparing to say goodbye to Inter Miami! Despite growing speculation about his future, the Argentine superstar appears determined to remain in Florida for several more years, and Fabrizio Romano has revealed that his stay could extend beyond 2028.
Details: According to Romano, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner is extremely happy at Inter Miami, and his family is equally comfortable with life in the United States. Messi intends to fulfil his current contract, which runs through the 2028 MLS season. Continuing beyond that date is also possible, although no additional extension has been agreed.
The update comes amid rumours linking Messi with a return to Argentina. Newell's Old Boys, where he played as a youngster, have been mentioned as a possible destination for 2027. However, Romano previously clarified that no negotiations were taking place and that the forward was not considering a move away from Miami.
Inter Miami officially announced Messi's contract extension in October 2025, securing his services through the end of 2028. The Argentine has repeatedly spoken positively about the club's ambitions and its new stadium, Miami Freedom Park. His continued presence would provide enormous sporting and commercial importance to the MLS franchise.
It's worth noting that Messi turned 39 in June 2026 and has been playing for Inter Miami since 2023, following his departure from Paris Saint-Germain. If he remains through 2028, he will be 41 when that season concludes. Any additional playing years would depend on his physical condition and a future agreement, rather than an extension already signed.
Reminder: The sacred number remains untouchable! Scaloni makes historic decision over Messi's shirt.
