McLaren ordered his driver to give up the win at the Hungarian Grand Prix. What happened?
There's new drama in the Formula 1 world championship of motor racing. This time the managers of the McLaren team did not allow their pilot, Lando Norris, to win the race.
At the end of qualifying, the first two places were taken by McLaren pilots Norris and Oscar Piastri. At the start of the race, Piastri was able to win the competition from his teammate.
Throughout the race, Piastri's advantage over Norris was not in question. However, during the second pit stops, Norris' mechanics did a better job and helped his driver move into first place.
Over the next 20 laps, McLaren management talked Lando into giving up the top spot. The bosses of the team said that it is necessary to save tires, hinted at teamwork, said that in this way titles can not be won and used many other ways to persuade the British pilot to give up the leadership.
In the end, three laps before the finish, Norris did let his teammate through.
For Oscar Piastri, this victory was the first in his career at the F1 level.
However, in addressing his team immediately after crossing the final line, no one felt joyful emotions: neither Piastri, who won for the first time in his career, nor Norris, who acted like a gentleman.
Despite the tension between the two drivers on the track, both McLaren drivers shook hands after the race was over.
Recall that Lando Norris right now is Max Verstappen's main competitor in the fight for the 2024 title. However, at the moment the Briton is 76 points behind the reigning world champion.
