Mateo Retegui Crowned Serie A’s Top Scorer in Debut Season With Atalanta

Naturalized Italian striker Mateo Retegui has finished his first season at Atalanta as Serie A’s top scorer. As reported by EFE, the 25-year-old forward netted 25 goals and added 8 assists, finishing well ahead of his closest rival, Italy teammate Moise Kean.
Retegui not only claimed the capocannonniere title, but also set a new single-season scoring record at Atalanta, surpassing Filippo Inzaghi’s 24-goal mark from 1996-97. Originally brought in as a short-term solution after Gianluca Scamacca’s injury, Retegui exceeded all expectations and tripled his goal tally from the previous year at Genoa.
The San Fernando-born forward, who came through the ranks at Boca Juniors and developed at Estudiantes, Talleres, and Tigre, also made his UEFA Champions League debut, scoring three goals in ten matches. Although Atalanta’s title hopes faded in early 2025, Retegui’s impact was undeniable. With a contract until 2028, the €25 million investment is already paying off handsomely.
