Inter Miami kicked off their FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a goalless draw against Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly, a result that left coach Javier Mascherano with mixed emotions. Speaking after the match at Hard Rock Stadium, the Argentine coach admitted his team struggled early on.

“We knew they were going to be a tough opponent, like most African sides. In the first half, nerves and anxiety got the better of us,” Mascherano said, pointing to unnecessary turnovers that allowed Al Ahly to counterattack with pace. Goalkeeper Óscar Ustari played a crucial role in keeping the score level during a difficult first half.

The second half, however, told a different story. Inter Miami dominated possession, created chances — including two close-range headers and a curling shot from Lionel Messi that nearly found the top corner — and looked far more cohesive. “We had chances to win it, and the team finished strong. We could have won the match,” said Mascherano.

“The important thing is that in the second half we understood the game. We found the spaces and tried to play the way we planned,” he added.

Mascherano also praised Messi, who played the full match just four days after a World Cup qualifier with Argentina. “He led the team again tonight, despite the tight schedule. That speaks volumes about his dedication,” said the coach.

Inter Miami now shifts its focus to its next Group A opponent, FC Porto, in a high-stakes clash set for Wednesday. Also in the group is Brazilian side Palmeiras, who played out another goalless draw with the Portuguese as the group remained all square.
