French swimmer Léon Marchand became the Olympic champion in the 400-meter individual medley at the Paris Games. He set a new Olympic record with a time of 4 minutes 2.95 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 4 minutes 3.84 seconds set by Michael Phelps in 2008.

This is Marchand's first Olympic gold medal. Interestingly, he was unable to break his own world record of 4 minutes 2.50 seconds, which he set earlier.

The silver medal was won by Japanese swimmer Tomoyuki Matsushita with a time of 4 minutes 8.62 seconds, while the bronze went to American Carson Foster, who finished with a time of 4 minutes 8.66 seconds.

The Paris Olympics will continue until August 11.
