Former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has dismissed speculation linking him to a move to Kaizer Chiefs prior to the club’s appointment of Nasreddine Nabi.

Speaking on Radio 947 with Robert Marawa, Mngqithi clarified that there were no formal discussions with Amakhosi, despite persistent rumors that he was in line for the role as his contract with Sundowns neared its end.

“I never had any talks with Kaizer Chiefs,” Mngqithi said clearly. “Some people say I didn’t want the job, but the truth is, I never got any offer. It was just gossip that never became real.”

Mngqithi had been a big topic of discussion, with many thinking he might take over from Arthur Zwane after Chiefs had a tough 2022/2023 season. But in the end, Chiefs chose Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi, who was from ASFAR Rabat in Morocco.

After Rulani Mokwena left Sundowns, Mngqithi went back to managing the team at Chloorkop, which stopped any more rumors about him joining Chiefs.

The former Lamontville Golden Arrows mentor’s comments now lay to rest any lingering doubts about his ties to Amakhosi, affirming that his focus remains on his current responsibilities at Sundowns.
