Manchester United drops out of race for Premier League star – transfer budget to blame
The Manchester United board has made a strategic decision regarding midfield reinforcements for the summer of 2026. Despite an extensive shortlist, the Red Devils have been forced to cross one of the Premier League’s brightest names off their list.
Details: According to The Athletic, Manchester United has officially abandoned its pursuit of Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali. The main reason for pulling out of the race is the astronomical price tag attached to the Italian.
With Casemiro already announcing his departure and Manuel Ugarte expressing dissatisfaction with his role and potentially leaving Old Trafford, Manchester United needs to bring in at least two top-class midfielders. Given financial fair play constraints, the club simply cannot afford to spend the entire budget on a single player, even if that player is Tonali, whom the Red Devils have been targeting since last summer.
Instead of splashing out on the expensive Italian, the club’s management has shifted focus to more pragmatic options. Nottingham Forest’s leader Elliot Anderson is now considered the club’s number one transfer priority.
Reminder: Manchester United is close to signing a contract with Wolverhampton star João Gomes.
