Today, October 6, in the third round of the Women's Super League, Manchester City will host West Ham United.
Manchester City is striving to break Chelsea’s five-year championship streak and reclaim the Super League title for the first time since 2016. Last season, they came agonizingly close, finishing behind Chelsea only on goal difference.
City started the new season somewhat shakily, drawing 2-2 with Arsenal in the opening round, followed by a narrow 1-0 win over Brighton. Additionally, they secured a spot in the UEFA Women’s Champions League by defeating FC Paris with an overwhelming aggregate score of 8-0 in the qualification final.
West Ham began their campaign with a heavy 0-3 loss to Manchester United, but managed to snatch a 1-1 draw against Liverpool in the following match. Midweek, the team faced Portsmouth in the League Cup and delivered a commanding 6-1 victory.
Last season, West Ham barely managed to stay in the Super League, finishing 11th, while the bottom-placed Bristol City were relegated to the Championship.
The teams have met several times, but in 15 encounters, West Ham has managed just one victory. The other 14 matches have ended in favor of Manchester City, with a combined scoreline of 46-8 in City’s favor.
