Manchester City player ratings vs Salford: Doku and McAtee on fire
Luis Torres
Dailysports's expert
Manchester City delivered a composed and straightforward performance, lacking dramatic or standout moments. The Etihad Stadium hosted Salford City, a League Two side currently sitting third in their division. The 8-0 victory marked the biggest win in this year’s FA Cup so far.
Pep Guardiola gave some game time to younger players, although the starting lineup still featured several first-team regulars. However, Guardiola’s reluctance to fully trust youth is becoming a notable challenge for Man City. The same key players are forced to play nearly every match without sufficient rest, which inevitably takes a toll on their energy. Interestingly, it was the young talents who were instrumental in today’s emphatic result.
Manchester City’s standout performers
Jérémy Doku
No extra words needed here: two goals, two assists, and a penalty he won and converted himself. What else could you ask for?
James McAtee
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder proved his immense potential, showing why he deserves more game time under Guardiola. McAtee bagged a hat-trick, not by playing deep like Phil Foden, but by positioning himself as a de facto center forward. His knack for being in the right place at the right time was truly impressive.
Jack Grealish
Grealish was arguably the team’s primary playmaker tonight. A large portion of the attacking play flowed through him, and it was evident that he was intended to be City’s main source of creativity. If that was indeed the plan, he executed it perfectly: two assists, plus winning and converting a penalty.
Nico O’Reilly
Another young talent deserving recognition. O’Reilly not only scored a goal but also put on a strong all-around display. Seven defensive actions, three successful tackles, and nine out of 11 duels won underline his contribution. Additionally, he was heavily involved in City’s build-up play with 90 touches and 61 accurate passes. It’s clear that the 19-year-old is ready for a bigger stage with the senior squad.
