Manchester City faces severe punishment. Expert names the most likely scenario after verdict on 115 charges
Manchester City could face severe sporting sanctions after the Premier League found the club guilty on 114 of the 115 charges brought against it. The club has already announced its intention to appeal the decision, but the punishment that may follow the proceedings remains unknown for now.
Football finance expert and Price of Football podcast co-host Kieran Maguire believes the most likely outcome will be a points deduction. According to him, similar sanctions have already been imposed on Everton and Nottingham Forest for breaches of financial regulations.
Everton were initially docked 10 points in 2023, but following an appeal, the penalty was reduced to six. The club were later deducted a further two points. Nottingham Forest lost four points in 2024 for exceeding the permitted level of losses.
At the same time, Maguire noted that the range of possible sanctions is far broader: from a fine and points deduction to expulsion from the Premier League. In theory, the annulment of titles won during the period covered by the breaches could also be discussed.
