The Malian Football Federation announced the parting of ways with the Malian coach in a statement, following the Malian team’s early elimination from the WAFU A tournament, a qualifier for the U20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Malian side’s campaign in this competition was marked by two consecutive defeats in their first two group-stage matches. This poor run of form precipitated the team’s elimination and sealed the fate of their manager.

“Taking note of the Executive Committee’s analysis, as outlined by President CISSET, regarding the requirements inherent in the new football governance structure, Mr Mamoutou Kane submitted his resignation by letter dated 20 October 2026,” explained the Malian Football Federation.

Mamoutou Kané thus steps down without having succeeded in leading Mali’s U20 team to victory in this tournament. Having been knocked out before even their third group match, Mali will contest the remainder of the competition without their manager on the bench. Mali will not be competing in the U20 Africa Cup of Nations.
