The final featured two of the strongest teams on the continent in recent years – Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad Casablanca. Mamelodi dominates in South Africa, while Wydad has been a past winner of the African Champions League. In the journey to the final, Mamelodi defeated Simba and Egyptian side Al-Ahly, while Wydad overcame Enyimba and Esperance Tunis.
In the first leg of the final, Wydad secured a 2-1 home victory. Therefore, in today's match, a draw would have sufficed for them. However, Mamelodi managed to score twice and keep a clean sheet. As a result, the reigning champions of South Africa emerged as the winners of the inaugural edition of the African Football League.
