Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Orlando Pirates 4-1 to increase their lead at the top of the Betway Premiership standings. Grant Kekana, Lucas Ribeiro Costa (2), and Teboho Mokoena all scored to help the team win comfortably at Loftus Versfeld.

A record-breaking performance

Sundowns' 35 goals in 15 league matches set a new PSL record for most goals scored halfway through a 30-game season. Kaizer Chiefs had the previous record of 31 goals (2004/05).

They also have the top defense, conceding only six goals while maintaining a +29 goal differential. Their only league defeat was against Polokwane City (1-0) in October 2024.

Why Pirates Struggled?
  • Injury Problems – Key defender Thabiso Sesane was out, forcing Thapelo Xoki into an unfamiliar role
  • Weak Left-Back Position – Paseko Mako struggled against Thapelo Morena’s attacks.
  • Teboho Mokoena dominated the game in midfield and scored a sensational late goal.
  • Tshegofatso Mabasa came in but made little impact, while Monnapule Saleng was left out.
  • Poor Decision-Making - Pirates relied too heavily on individual skill, whereas Sundowns was tactically superior.

Sundowns now have complete control of the title race, while Pirates must rebound if they are to remain in contention.
