Malawi National Football Team head coach Kalisto Pasuwa has emphasized the need for his team to compete against the best as they prepare for a crucial African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier against South Africa.

A Challenge Against a Top African Side

Following a dominant 4-0 aggregate win over Comoros, Malawi has set up a final qualification round clash with Bafana Bafana, who secured their place with a convincing 3-1 away victory against Egypt. The first leg is scheduled between May 2-4, with the return leg taking place on May 10-11.

“We knew before the game started that we were going to play one of the African football giants, so we are not even surprised. To be the best, we have to compete against the best,” Pasuwa stated.

Tactical Adjustments on the Horizon

Recognizing the challenge ahead, Pasuwa hinted at potential tactical changes to counter South Africa’s formidable squad.

“We will definitely come up with something different in the next round. It may be a change in the system, formation, or personnel. The game in South Africa will be different from the one here in Malawi, so we will consider changes, definitely.”

Malawi and South Africa last met in the 2023 COSAFA Cup, where a goalless draw led to Bafana Bafana winning 5-3 on penalties. With a CHAN finals spot on the line, Pasuwa’s squad must step up to secure qualification.

Flames Shift Focus to FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

Before their CHAN showdown, Malawi will first turn their attention to the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, hosting Namibia at Bingu National Stadium on March 20.
