Mabululu Shines as Al Ahli Tripoli Dominate in Libyan Premier League
The Libyan Premier League is getting more exciting as it enters its second round of games for the 2024-25 season. Al Ahli Tripoli, who were the champions in the 2022-23 season, showed their strength by winning 5-0 against Asaria on Thursday. A new player, Mabululu, was the star of the match.
The Angola national team striker, acquired for a reported seven-digit fee, scored twice in the first half, showcasing the form that made him a star at Egypt’s Al-Ittihad Alexandria. The goals add to his tally after another brace in Ahli’s opening win against Al Malaab El Libby. Mabululu’s stellar week was capped off with him winning Goal of the Year at the 2024 CAF Awards.
Ahli’s revamped squad also saw contributions from Muaid Ellafi, a former Wydad AC winger, and Mohamed El-Munir, a Libya national team left-back, who both added goals. New signings Ghailene Chaalali (ex-Espérance Tunis) and Sudanese internationals Al-Gozoli Nooh and Bakhit Khamis have bolstered the team’s depth as they aim for another championship.
Mabululu will face stiff competition for the top scorer title from fellow Angolan striker Ary Papel, who continues to impress with Al Akhdar. Papel converted a penalty in Akhdar’s 2-1 victory over Al-Suqoor on Tuesday, maintaining his prolific form.
Elsewhere, Asswehly defeated Abu Salem 3-1, with Libya national team forward Omar Al Khouja netting twice after former NYCFC winger Ismail Tajouri-Shradi opened the scoring.
The league features 35 teams divided into four regional groups, with the top three from each group advancing to a championship stage.
