Lyon’s Relegation Hits Botafogo’s Finances and Transfer Strategy

Lyon’s fall to France’s second division is already echoing far beyond Ligue 1. For Botafogo, the consequences are concrete. Both clubs belong to Eagle Football, the multi-club group led by American businessman John Textor. With one of the group’s central teams losing top-tier revenues, the alarm bells are ringing in Rio.

Lyon’s drop means a sharp reduction in earnings from TV rights, European competitions, sponsorships and bonuses. This weakens the group’s financial engine and increases the burden on its other members. Botafogo, currently enjoying both sporting success and strong market value, becomes Eagle’s key asset, with growing pressure to generate revenue through player sales and performance.

Another setback lies in the recruitment strategy. Textor often pitched a potential move to Lyon as a major lure when convincing players to sign with Botafogo. That argument now holds less weight, with the French side outside the top flight.

Luiz Henrique’s transfer to Zenit earlier this year exemplified the model: recruit, develop, and sell. Without an immediate high-profile European destination, the system faces new challenges.

To raise capital, Eagle recently sold its stake in Crystal Palace to businessman Woody Johnson—part of a financial maneuver to stabilize Lyon. Yet, Textor maintains that the group remains guided by players’ interests. “I don’t control those decisions. I just try to bring everyone together and enjoy the joy of it,” he said at the end of 2024.

Botafogo, now in the Round of 16 at the Club World Cup, is thriving on the field. But off it, the club must brace for financial aftershocks caused by its European partner’s decline. While Lyon is still appealing the decision, the effects are already being felt in Brazil.
