Lyon on the brink of following Bordeaux’s fate: relegation looming

French club Lyon is facing severe financial troubles that could result in the team being forced to drop down a division.

Details: According to L’Equipe, the French National Financial Control Authority has imposed sanctions on Lyon, including a transfer ban and salary oversight for the upcoming transfer window. However, these penalties are not the most severe for the club, as it has been conditionally relegated.

If the club’s management fails to address the financial issues, Lyon could face relegation to Ligue 2 at the end of the season, regardless of their sporting results.

Reminder: In a recent press release, Lyon declared a debt of half a billion euros. The club had already faced a transfer ban in the summer of 2023, but that punishment was lifted last winter, and the club passed its summer licensing process without issues.

This summer, Bordeaux, which also struggled with significant financial difficulties, was relegated two divisions.
