In Ligue 1 matchday 19, Lyon played out a 1-1 draw with Nantes, extending their winless streak. This result proved to be the final straw for the club's management.
Details: According to L'Équipe, Pierre Sage has been dismissed as Lyon's head coach. Sage was initially appointed as interim coach after Fabio Grosso was sacked in November 2023. In January 2024, he was confirmed as head coach until the end of the season, during which the team secured UEFA Europa League qualification and reached the Coupe de France final.
However, Lyon is currently on a five-game winless run and recently suffered a shock exit from the Coupe de France at the hands of an amateur side.
Former AC Milan manager Paulo Fonseca is now a leading candidate for the position. Talks between the club’s owner and the Portuguese coach have already taken place. Fonseca has arrived in Lyon with his assistants.
Reminder: Lyon's star player Rayan Cherki could leave the French club in the winter or summer transfer window. The midfielder has drawn interest from several top clubs, including Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, and Borussia Dortmund, as well as leading English teams monitoring his situation closely.
