Álvarez heads to court! Argentine star finds loophole in Atlético contract

And these aren’t empty threats: there’s precedent. Social Court No. 1 in San Sebastián previously ruled a €30 million release clause excessive and disproportionate, cutting it down to just €5 million. Barcelona’s former board member and lawyer Toni Freixa has openly stated that Álvarez could follow the same path, challenging the clause as incompatible with fundamental labor rights.

The situation hit a deadlock back at the World Cup: in June, the Argentine striker publicly urged Atlético to let him go, calling a move to Barcelona his dream. Barcelona offered €100 million, Real Madrid went as high as €150 million, but Los Colchoneros rejected everything, pointing to the release clause. By late July, Atlético had even filed a complaint with FIFA, accusing Barcelona of illegal contact with the player, and on August 8, Diego Simeone declared: the club’s decision is final—Álvarez is going nowhere.
