Luis Suárez took part in a rescue operation. What happened?
A serious incident unfolded in Ciudad de la Costa (Canelones, Uruguay) from Friday evening to Saturday afternoon. A 49-year-old man climbed a six-meter tree and threatened to take his own life unless his 53-year-old partner appeared at the scene. The situation lasted nearly 20 hours, drawing the attention of the Republican Guard, the public, and even notable figures, including footballer Luis Suárez and his wife, Sofía Balbi.
Details: The incident began around 11:00 PM on Friday. According to police reports, the man stated that he would end his life if his partner did not arrive. The event garnered significant attention, with Suárez and Balbi present at the scene as they happened to be nearby during a walk. The forward, currently in Uruguay before returning to the U.S. to play for Inter Miami in MLS, joined representatives from a non-governmental organization specializing in social psychology in attempting to communicate with the man.
Quote: “Suárez helped establish a connection with the man, and we tried to speak to him with empathy and understanding preventing a tragedy,” said a representative of the organization in an interview with Telenoche Uruguay.
After prolonged negotiations, the man was persuaded to climb down from the tree. He was handed over to the Ministry of the Interior’s Specialized Unit for Domestic Violence Prevention, where he will receive the necessary professional support.
