Luis Malagón Sends Bold Message Ahead of Gold Cup Final vs USA

In an interview with TUDN, Mexico’s goalkeeper Luis Malagón made headlines with a bold statement ahead of Sunday’s Gold Cup final against the United States, after El Tri defeated Honduras 1-0 and the host team saw off Guatemala. After helping El Tri secure a spot in the title match, Malagón didn’t hold back: “As they taught me at América, a clásico is played to be won, and we’ll give everything to keep the Cup at home.”
Malagón has emerged as a key figure under coach Javier Aguirre, conceding just two goals so far in the tournament. He credited the team’s strong defensive performance to unity and collective effort, saying, “We’re a family. That’s what makes the difference.”
He also highlighted the camaraderie among Mexico’s goalkeepers, praising the healthy competition and support between himself, Tala Rangel, and Guillermo Ochoa. This positive atmosphere, he noted, has been vital in maintaining high standards throughout the squad.
The highly anticipated final will take place this Sunday, July 6, at Houston’s NRG Stadium. With the fierce rivalry between Mexico and the U.S. reignited, Malagón’s fiery words have only added fuel to the fire as El Tri looks to claim the Gold Cup on American soil.
