Liverpool Montevideo continue to solidify their rise in Uruguayan football with a 1-0 win over Cerro Largo on Sunday, securing the 2025 Apertura title. As reported by FútbolUy, it marks the club’s sixth short tournament crown since the format’s introduction in 1994, positioning them fifth on the all-time list.

Only Nacional (25), Peñarol (20), Defensor Sporting (8), and Danubio (7) have won more. Liverpool’s consistent success began in 2019 under Paulo Pezzolano and has continued with Jorge Bava at the helm. The club previously lifted the Intermedio in 2019 and 2023, the Clausura in 2020 and 2023, and the Apertura in 2022.

Though the 2022 title fell short of a national championship due to a semifinal loss to Nacional, Liverpool did clinch the Uruguayan Championship in 2023. Now, with their spot secured in this year’s final, they aim to repeat that feat.

Meanwhile, clubs like Defensor Sporting and Danubio—once considered contenders for Uruguay’s “third giant” status—haven’t celebrated in years. Liverpool, by contrast, are turning consistency into legacy. Their ascent is no longer a surprise—it’s a statement.
