José Mourinho has never been a coach to tiptoe around superstars, and Kylian Mbappé just found out the hard way. The Special One reportedly summoned his star striker for a private conversation that left no room for interpretation.

Details: According to El Chiringuito, Mourinho met Mbappé over breakfast on Tuesday at the Valdebebas training complex and delivered a blunt message: outside, I will defend you when asked, but here, no, I will not defend you. The Portuguese coach reportedly scolded the Frenchman harshly over his recent off-pitch behaviour, which has triggered fury among Real Madrid supporters. The warning follows a turbulent spell for the striker, who has been nursing a left knee injury sustained on international duty against Turkey on September 25, only to be photographed at a Parisian nightclub with his partner Ester Expósito and filmed cycling in the Swiss Alps, days after Mourinho publicly warned that footballers who ride bikes risk breaking a leg.

The sequence of events reads like a deliberate provocation in the eyes of Madridistas. After injuring his knee, Mbappé was spotted enjoying a night out in Paris, and his cycling video landed just days after Mourinho told an interviewer that riders fall off and maybe don't play for three matches, or worse, break a leg. Radio Marca added fuel to the fire by reporting that the striker had asked the club's board to support his nomination for the 2026 Ballon d'Or and was refused, raising questions about simmering tension behind the scenes. The club's position, however, appears measured: Mbappé's absence from training and his quick private-jet trip to Paris on Tuesday were reportedly authorised by the club, and he returned to Madrid by 21:00 the same evening. He has since resumed group training, with the knee discomfort subsiding.

It's worth noting that Mourinho's management style has always revolved around drawing exactly this kind of line, protecting players publicly while demanding accountability privately. The immediate question is team selection: despite returning to full training, Mbappé could start on the substitutes' bench against Villarreal at the Bernabéu on Saturday, with Vinícius Júnior also at risk of being dropped. On the pitch, the numbers remain formidable: Mbappé has scored seven goals in seven LaLiga matches this season, and Madrid sit fourth on 15 points, well within touch of the leaders despite a stuttering start under their returning coach.

Reminder: Will Mbappé play against Villarreal? The answer is known.
