Liga MX Update: Playoff Picture Takes Shape, Fines Loom for Bottom Teams
With just four matchdays remaining in the Clausura 2025 regular season, Liga MX is heading into a crucial stretch. The playoff picture is beginning to take shape, and while some teams dream of glory, others are fighting to avoid costly financial penalties. According to Claro Sports, América, Toluca and León currently occupy the top three spots, securing direct Liguilla qualification.
Tigres, Cruz Azul and Necaxa round out the top six, while Pachuca, Juárez FC, Pumas and Monterrey would enter the Play In phase. If the season ended today, Pachuca would face Juárez in one match, while Monterrey would take on Pumas. The winner of Pachuca vs Juárez would earn the seventh playoff spot, while the loser would get a second chance against the winner of Rayados vs Pumas for the final Liguilla berth.
At the other end of the standings, the relegation-style coefficient table spells trouble for Atlas, Puebla and Mazatlán FC. Despite being in 12th place overall, Mazatlán cannot participate in the Play In if they remain at the bottom in the coefficient standings. The same applies to Atlas. If standings hold, Atlas would owe 33 million pesos, Puebla 47 million, and Mazatlán a staggering 80 million.
The final weeks of the season promise high drama. Teams are fighting for playoff places, second chances, and financial survival. With so much on the line — from titles to millions in fines — the conclusion of the Clausura 2025 campaign will be anything but dull.
