Latvian basketball player Jānis Timma found dead in Moscow. What happened?
Latvian basketball player Jānis Timma, who enjoyed a successful career in the EuroLeague with various clubs, was found dead near a residential building in central Moscow, reports Russian news agency TASS.
It is suspected that the cause of death was suicide following a fall from a great height. Near Timma's body, his mobile phone was discovered, containing messages from his former wife, Ukrainian singer Anna Sedokova. The couple had been married since 2020, but their divorce was officially finalized just days before the tragedy, on December 9.
It appears that the separation had a profound emotional impact on the athlete, potentially leading to this tragic outcome.
Timma began his basketball career in 2008 with ASK Riga. In 2013, he was drafted by the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies, though his rights were later traded to the Orlando Magic. Despite this, Jānis never played in the NBA.
He did, however, enjoy a notable career in the EuroLeague, playing nearly 100 games for clubs like Baskonia, Olympiacos Piraeus, UNICS Kazan, and Khimki Moscow.
Timma also achieved success with Latvia's U18 national team, earning bronze at the 2010 European Championship.
