At the Junior Hockey World Championship, the Latvian national team sensationally defeated Canada in a shootout with a score of 3-2.
Details. The only goal in the shootout was scored by Erik Mateiko, who hit the net of Jack Ivankovich on the eighth round. Prior to that, none of the 15 players had managed to score.
Mateiko and Peters Bulans scored power-play goals at the end of the Group A match. Mateiko equalized the score at 1-1 with 6:42 left, and Bulans made it 2-2 with 2:29 remaining before the buzzer.
"We found a way. In one hockey game, anything is possible," said Latvia's head coach Artis Abols.
Reminder. In the next match of the Junior Hockey World Championship, Latvia will play against the United States. Canada will face Germany.
