Kofi Adams: Ghana Government Will Not Cover Supporters’ Travel to 2026 FIFA World Cup
The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has confirmed that the Ghanaian government will not provide financial support for transporting fans to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
In an interview with Peace FM, Mr. Adams explained that the decision is driven by the country’s ongoing economic challenges.
“Well, there is no game or tournament we don’t go with supporters, but whether I will take them or someone else will take them is a different ball game,” he said. He added, “So far, the government has not indicated that it will send supporters. I don’t think it is something I will recommend.”
Highlighting the government’s focus on domestic sports development, Mr. Adams said, “We are in a period of austerity. We need money to build sports infrastructure in Ghana. If we are going to spend money to transport supporters all the way to America, that same amount can build five multipurpose parks in some communities.”
The Minister emphasized that Ghanaians living abroad could help fill the gap.
“I believe there are a lot of Ghanaians in those areas. Anyone who wants to go should find their own resources; we can facilitate their travel documents. Or we can mobilize support from corporate bodies — both private and public — to assist the fans,” he noted.
Ghana secured its spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup by finishing at the top of Group I in the African qualifiers, amassing an impressive 25 points.
