Kim Lars Björkegren Reveals Ghana’s Three Targets at WAFCON 2026

Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has revealed Ghana’s three main targets at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup among the team’s biggest ambitions.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of Ghana’s opening game against Cape Verde on Wednesday, July 29, the Swedish tactician has set out a clear three-step plan for Ghana. The first objective is to progress from the group stage, while the second is to reach the semi-finals and secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The ultimate goal, however, is to go all the way and lift the WAFCON trophy.

“We have three targets. The first is to qualify from the group stage. The second, which is very important, is to reach the semi-finals because that will qualify us for the World Cup. If we achieve that, then we have to go all the way and win WAFCON.”

The Black Queens will begin their WAFCON 2026 campaign against Cape Verde on Wednesday, July 29, before taking on Cameroon on Sunday, August 2.

Ghana will then wrap up their group-stage campaign against Mali on Thursday, August 6, as they look to secure a place in the knockout rounds and move closer to their World Cup qualification target.
