Kenya AFCON 2027: Benni McCarthy Admits It Could Take a Decade to Win Trophy
Kenya head coach Benni McCarthy has given his honest opinion, saying it may take the Harambee Stars up to a decade to lift an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy.
Speaking ahead of Kenya's Group D qualifier against a double-header match against South Africa in November, the former Manchester United attacking coach said:
"Even if you were to pay me millions and millions of dollars to win AFCON, I don't think Kenya has the resources and the team strong enough to compete with Morocco, Egypt, Cote d'Ivoire, and Senegal," he added.
"Kenya can win AFCON, but it's highly unlikely we would have a chance to win. I'm not disrespecting anybody. I'm just being honest," he said.
Kenya will co-host the 2027 AFCON alongside Uganda and Tanzania, with McCarthy insisting that the immediate priority should be delivering a successful tournament and using it as a foundation for future growth.
"For us, the main objective is to host the tournament and make sure that the AFCON is a big success for Kenya, for Tanzania, and for Uganda," he said.
