Just In: Ireland Forced to Make Changes for Remainder of ODI Series Against Namibia
Ireland have been forced to make changes to their squad for the remainder of the ODI series against Namibia after captain Paul Stirling was ruled out with a fractured finger.
The 36-year-old sustained the injury while fielding during Ireland’s defeat in the third ODI on Tuesday, leaving his side trailing 2-1 in the five-match series.
Tim Tector has been called up to replace Stirling, while Lorcan Tucker will take over as captain for the remaining two matches.
Cricket Ireland confirmed that Stirling fractured the ring finger on his left hand while attempting to take a low catch at short cover off a powerful cut shot from Namibia’s Jan Frylinck.
"Fielding at short cover, he dived for a low catch from a full-blooded cut shot from Jan Frylinck which hit his fingertip and caused the break," Cricket Ireland said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.
"A hospital assessment yesterday evening confirmed the injury, and Stirling will now return home for recovery and rehabilitation," the statement added.
