Josephs Backs Pirates for Continental Glory, Urges Key Signings
Former Orlando Pirates shot-stopper and current Harambee Stars goalkeeper coach Moeneeb Josephs couldn’t resist a jab at Kaizer Chiefs while hailing the Buccaneers’ superb campaign.
Pirates on All Fronts
Josephs, speaking on the SoccerBeat podcast, celebrated Pirates’ CAF Champions League semi-final berth after their narrow 1-0 aggregate win over MC Alger. The Soweto giants remain in contention for the league title and the Nedbank Cup, having already lifted the MTN8 trophy this season.
“We don’t have time for pre-season. Some teams are preparing for next season already — we’re chasing trophies,” Josephs quipped, taking a veiled swipe at rivals Kaizer Chiefs.
Chiefs in Rebuild Mode
The contrast is clear. Chiefs, under Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi, sit eighth in the league and continue to frame their project as a long-term rebuild. Fellow ex-Pirates star Lebohang Mokoena joined the mockery, saying:
“They still have to find those pages that are missing in that project.”
Transfer Suggestions
Looking ahead, Josephs urged Pirates to reinforce their squad for next season’s continental battles by signing:
- Oswin Appollis (Polokwane City)
- Fawaaz Basadien (Stellenbosch FC)
“They can add quality and depth — especially with Mofokeng potentially moving to Europe,” he added.
With the season nearing its climax, Pirates look to write a chapter their rivals can only watch from afar.
