Fenerbahçe head coach Jose Mourinho is once again swept up in fond nostalgia for his past glories. The Portuguese tactician took to his Instagram page to reminisce about his very first Champions League victory.
Mourinho shared snapshots from the 2004 Champions League final in Gelsenkirchen. In that memorable clash, Mourinho's Porto faced French side Monaco, setting up one of the most unexpected finals in Champions League history.
“Gelsenkirchen 26 May 2004 FCPorto 3 Monaco 0 I am sorry @bennimac17 to leave you on the bentch but i had a feeling the crazy kid @calberto_oficial was going to score 🙂.Missing the meals on the team bus.Hope we can all meet on the 26 May 2029 and celebrate 25 years of incredible history.Take care old guys 🙂!” Mourinho wrote in his post.
Let’s recall: in that final, where underdogs Porto and Monaco made a surprise appearance, it was the Portuguese side that claimed a convincing victory. The goals came from Carlos Alberto, Deco, and Alenichev.
Immediately after that triumph, in the summer of 2004, Mourinho was appointed Chelsea head coach.
