Johnny Cardoso Draws Confidence From Spurs Interest, Commits to Betis Future
Johnny Cardoso is turning heads in LaLiga, and reported Premier League interest has only boosted his belief. The Real Betis midfielder, a regular under Manuel Pellegrini since his move from Internacional in January 2024, addressed Tottenham's rumoured pursuit—where the London club holds a £21 million buy option—with appreciation. Speaking to Diario de Sevilla, Cardoso said the speculation gives him confidence and makes him feel valued.
"I can’t lie, it gives me confidence and makes me feel appreciated because I must be doing something right," he said. "But right now, my focus is entirely on Betis. We have important objectives this season."
Cardoso, under contract through 2030, has appeared 33 times this campaign and is eager to remain if Betis secure Champions League qualification. "Of course I’d like to stay. This team has felt like home since I arrived, and I’m very happy here."
Although called up to the USMNT for the recent Concacaf Nations League Finals, a muscular strain forced him to withdraw. The U.S. went on to lose to Panama and Canada, finishing fourth.
Still, Cardoso remains optimistic. "Yes, we have the best team in Concacaf," he told ESPN. "We have a lot of young talent and room to grow."
He expressed faith in Mauricio Pochettino’s leadership despite early struggles. "Adjusting to a new coach takes time with short international breaks," he said. "But we’re learning his system, and I’m excited to work with him again."
