Jamie Carragher Apologizes for AFCON Remarks After Backlash Jamie Carragher Apologizes for AFCON Remarks After Backlash

In response to criticism from African football leaders for his controversial comments regarding the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which he first described as a "non-major" competition, Jamie Carragher has apologized.

Controversial Statement on Sky Sports

During a Sky Sports broadcast, Carragher suggested that Mohamed Salah's participation in AFCON hurt his chances of winning the Ballon d'Or, implying that the competition lacked prestige compared to other international tournaments. This statement angered many, leading to criticism from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and football icons such as Emmanuel Adebayor, El Hadji Diouf, Jay-Jay Okocha.

Carragher’s Apology

Facing intense scrutiny, Carragher admitted his poor choice of words and clarified his stance:

“I have very strong opinions, I love debate, and that will never change. However, I would not want to be described as an ignorant or disrespectful pundit, whether it's towards a player, a club, a country, a continent, or a tournament. Where I went wrong was that I clumsily described AFCON as not being a major tournament.”

He further explained:

“I was trying to highlight what might influence Ballon d'Or voting. I meant to express that AFCON, like the Gold Cup and the Asian Cup, may not carry the same weight with Ballon d'Or voters, but they are still major tournaments. It was never my intention to offend anyone. I hope my remarks are understood, and I sincerely apologize to anyone who felt disrespected.”
