Valentin Koffi N’GUESSAN KOUASSI, a federal referee with the Yamoussoukro Regional Referees’ Commission, has died after collapsing, the Ivorian Football Federation has announced.

The tragedy occurred on Thursday 27 August 2026 in Yamoussoukro, whilst the Ivorian referee was taking part in the pre-season fitness test for the 2026–2027 season, organised by the Central Referees’ Commission of the Ivorian Football Federation.

According to information provided by the Ivorian Football Federation, Valentin Koffi N’GUESSAN KOUASSI had already completed two runs in the 40-metre sprint test. Whilst waiting for his third run, he fell ill before collapsing.

The medical team present at the test site intervened to administer first aid. He was then taken to a clinic in Yamoussoukro. Despite the care provided by the medical staff, referee Valentin Koffi N’GUESSAN KOUASSI could not be saved. He died after falling ill.

This sudden death has plunged the refereeing community and the Ivorian football world into deep sorrow.
