Cruz Azul’s sporting director Iván Alonso broke his silence on Tuesday, providing clarity on the departure of head coach Vicente Sánchez despite the team’s recent CONCACAF Champions Cup triumph. As reported by Mediotiempo, Alonso emphasized that the decision was based on long-term strategy and organizational continuity, not immediate results.

The change stems from the departure of Martín Anselmi in January 2025. At the time, Sánchez—already familiar with the club’s tactical model—was seen as the natural interim successor. “He understood the process and the structure. We knew the transition wouldn’t be easy, and Vicente stepped in to help stabilize things,” Alonso explained.

After evaluating the season, the club chose to move forward with former Necaxa manager Nicolás Larcamón. “We decided he and his staff were best suited to continue our project,” Alonso stated.

Addressing speculation of personal conflict, Alonso was firm: “There was no fallout. At Cruz Azul, internal disagreements are resolved within the organization. We don’t air issues through the press or external channels.”

With Larcamón now at the helm, Cruz Azul aims to reinforce its identity and stay aligned with a long-term vision grounded in sporting excellence.
