It's no secret that Manchester United's current position as a club is pretty dire, and the people who have worked at Old Trafford are convinced that the problems have been lying on the surface without being properly addressed for years now.

This is the view of Erik ten Hag's successor in the team, Ralf Rangnick, who after his departure from Manchester United in the summer of 2022 said that the team needs ‘open-heart surgery’. Nor is he recanting his words now:

‘I probably made that statement when the season was almost over, about two years ago. It's probably only been two or three weeks since ten Hag was asked about the same thing. He said then that I was right in my analysis. I don't know how many players they've signed since then, but it looks like I was right,’ the Austrian said in a conversation with local TV.

About to leave Old Trafford in the summer of 2022, Rangnick said:

‘You don't even need glasses to see and analyse where the problems are. Now it's a question of how do you solve them? It's not enough to just make small changes - cosmetic changes.’

‘In medicine, you'd say it's open-heart surgery. If it happens, and everybody realises it needs to happen, and if people want to work together, then it will make sense, and I believe it doesn't take two or three years to change these things. It can happen within one year.’
