The Italian national team really was incredibly close to appointing Pep Guardiola.
Details: Paolo Maldini has revealed new details about the negotiations with the Spanish tactician. According to the AC Milan legend, the sides had virtually reached an agreement, and Guardiola was seriously preparing for a potential role with the Azzurri.
“We were extremely close to bringing in Pep Guardiola as the new head coach of the Italian national team.
Pep was willing to accept the same salary as the previous coach and had already started thinking about the players and possible squad options,” Maldini said.
However, just a few days later, everything changed. Guardiola decided to take a break from coaching.
“A few days later, Pep decided to decline because he was tired and wanted to spend some time with his family. We respect his decision,” Maldini added.
It's worth noting that, in the end, Roberto Mancini returned as Italy's head coach. His appointment was officially confirmed by the Italian Football Federation on July 28, while Claudio Ranieri was named FIGC technical director.
