Irreplaceable Leader: Buckingham Hails Troost-Ekong

Al-Kholood coach Des Buckingham has praised William Troost-Ekong after the former Nigeria captain left the club, calling him an irreplaceable leader. Troost-Ekong joined Al-Kholood in 2024 and completed a January move to Qatari side Al Ahli SC.

Speaking at a press conference, Buckingham said, “You can't replace William… I am not looking to replace William as a player or a person,” while confirming the club would recruit another defender. He described Ekong as “by far the best leader of people…,” highlighting his impact on team culture and standards. Buckingham added that the defender helped him settle at the club and insisted, “I don't think we could replace William,” stressing that his influence will be felt beyond the pitch.
