Indian wrestler who created a sensation is disqualified from Olympics ahead of finals
The Olympics ended in absolute tragedy for Indian athlete Vinesh Phogat, who competes in the 50 kg weight category.
Yesterday, Phogat caused one of the biggest upsets of the day by eliminating Japan's Yui Susaki in the first round. Susaki had never lost an international match before, boasting a record of 82-0.
Phogat ultimately reached the final, but she will be unable to compete. Phogat was disqualified for failing to meet the weight category requirements.
The athlete stayed up all night after reaching the final, diligently working to shed the extra 2 kg but fell short by just 100 grams. She is currently hospitalized.
Instead of Phogat, Cuban wrestler Yusneylys Guzmán, who lost to Phogat in the semifinals, will compete for gold. Her opponent will be American Sarah Ann Hildebrandt.
