Long-term changes are brewing within the Indian national cricket team management.

Details: According to Hindustan Times, head coach Gautam Gambhir has officially requested an extension of his contract through the end of the 2028 T20 World Cup. Gambhir is determined to build a succession plan and cement the team’s global success, but his strategy hinges directly on the form of the squad’s key leaders.

It is also reported that while current captain and reigning world champion Suryakumar Yadav enjoys the full backing of the head coach, his position is far from untouchable.

It is claimed that Yadav faces a "decisive test" ahead. The upcoming tours of Ireland and England will be crucial for his captaincy: the BCCI leadership and coaching staff will closely scrutinize not only his leadership qualities but also his personal performance with the bat.

The critical assessment of Yadav’s game reflects Gambhir’s desire to minimize risks ahead of future major tournaments. If the captain fails to deliver consistent results during the European series, a change in T20 leadership could be on the table as early as the end of 2026.
