"In the last three La Liga games, strange things have happened." Ancelotti criticizes VAR ahead of Manchester City clash
Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has criticized the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) system ahead of the Champions League round-of-16 second-leg match against Manchester City.
Details: According to the coach, VAR has removed responsibility from referees, and this is dangerous for football.
Quote: "I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. In the last three La Liga games, strange things have happened that have harmed us and which I still don’t understand. In Europe, I’m more relaxed: VAR intervenes less, and the referees are the best on the continent.
I have doubts about this system. VAR has removed responsibility from the referee, and when you take that responsibility away from the referee, it becomes dangerous. VAR was introduced to eliminate clear and obvious errors, not to interfere in football matters: many times, we look for a specific image on the monitor, sacrificing the natural flow of the game.
For example, many penalties are given for foot contact, which, for me, is part of football. I don’t know how many coaches agree with this rule: I think of the penalty awarded for the foul on Le Normand, or on Tchouaméni, or on Camavinga. I would like to see fewer VAR interventions and more responsibility for the referees. Everyone can make mistakes, of course. But what I don’t understand is that final decisions are made by VAR," Ancelotti told Gazzetta.
Reminder: Earlier, Ancelotti criticized the referee for sending off Jude Bellingham in the match against Osasuna.
