“I’m Officially Rejecting It” – Achraf Hakimi Refuses 2025 AFCON Title
Achraf Hakimi, captain of the Morocco national football team, has reportedly rejected the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, insisting that Morocco did not deserve the trophy after losing to Senegal in the tournament final.
The Paris Saint-Germain defender reportedly made the statement despite the Confederation of African Football (CAF) later awarding Morocco the championship by default. Hakimi emphasized that neither he nor his teammates should accept the title under the circumstances.
“My mum told me to reject the AFCON trophy. I’m officially rejecting it and hope my teammates do the same. We had a chance but failed to win,” Hakimi said, acknowledging Senegal as the deserving champions.
He added, “That’s football; sometimes you win and lose. Senegal beat us fairly and deserved it. It would be unfair to ruin their joy after all the hard work.”
Hakimi concluded by stressing his respect for CAF’s decision, but reaffirmed his stance:
“I respect the decision, but I’m officially rejecting the trophy. I didn’t win the 2025 AFCON. Congratulations to Senegal once again.”
