Iker Muniain’s stint at San Lorenzo has come to an unexpected early end. According to TyC Sports, the Spanish midfielder has decided not to return to Buenos Aires and will remain in Bilbao, prioritizing time with his young children. Despite being under contract until December 2025, Muniain is seriously contemplating retirement.

Concerns had already surfaced within the club about his absence from preseason training. Head coach Damián Ayude recently spoke with Muniain and confirmed the emotional toll of being away from his family: “He really missed them,” Ayude stated.

Muniain is expected to formally announce his decision during a press conference in Bilbao this Friday or Saturday. While not yet definitive, stepping away from professional football appears increasingly likely. “It’s a decision Iker must announce himself,” sources close to the player told TyC Sports.

His time at San Lorenzo, though brief, left a lasting impression. Muniain played 26 matches (18 starts), scored four goals, and added one assist. But beyond the stats, he earned the admiration of supporters through his commitment and flashes of brilliance.

The 2024-25 campaign proved turbulent, with off-field controversies, unpaid wages, and a humbling loss to Platense. After that, Muniain chose to step back and reflect. Whether he returns to the game or hangs up his boots for good remains to be seen.
