Former Super Eagles striker Jude Odion Ighalo has backed Victor Osimhen as the right man to captain Nigeria ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, following William Troost-Ekong’s retirement from international football. His exit, despite earlier inclusion in the provisional squad, created a leadership gap and reignited debate over who should wear the armband.

Speaking in an interview with journalist Colin Udoh, Ighalo said leadership is not about age or seniority. “Victor, I will give you my reason… not because he is the oldest player,” he said, noting that Ndidi, Iwobi, Simon and Awaziem are older.

He described Osimhen as outspoken, fearless and ready to demand accountability, unlike Ndidi, who is “not the talking type.” According to Ighalo, Osimhen “is going to speak on behalf of the team… ginger the boys… fight for the boys.”

The former Manchester United striker said the captain acts as a bridge between players and the NFF, adding that Osimhen’s status means officials will “listen to him.” He added that strong performances give players power to demand better standards.

Nigeria are drawn with Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania in Group C as they chase AFCON title after missing the 2026 World Cup final.
