"I would retire": Former world champion Mairis Briedis shares thoughts on Usyk's future
Oleksandr Usyk defeated Fury in a rematch, successfully defending his championship titles. Former world champion Mairis Briedis has shared his perspective on the Ukrainian's future in boxing.
Details: In an exclusive interview with the Dailysports team, the Latvian boxer stated that if he were in Usyk's place, he would retire. Recently, there have been rumors about Usyk potentially returning to the cruiserweight division, but Briedis believes this could pose significant challenges for the Ukrainian fighter.
Quote: "If I were Oleksandr, I would retire undefeated and not move back to cruiserweight. This is because Usyk has spent years gaining weight. If he returns to cruiserweight, he will have to cut weight, and that would be a major stress on his body," Briedis stated.
He also mentioned that transitioning weight classes could bring Usyk face-to-face with stronger opponents.
Quote: "I think if Oleksandr Usyk moves back to cruiserweight and fights Jai Opetaia, the Australian will destroy him. Not just win, but completely dominate him. Usyk has spent a long time building this weight, this muscle mass, and if he cuts it now, he won't have the strength. I'm confident that Opetaia would beat Usyk," Briedis explained.
