Algeria’s 2-0 defeat to Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations marked the end of Riyad Mahrez’s AFCON journey.
After the quarter-final loss in Marrakech, the 34-year-old announced, “I won’t be playing another African Cup after six African Cups, more than 20 games.” Mahrez reflected on his proudest moment, adding, “I’m happy I brought one big star for my country,” recalling Algeria’s 2019 triumph.
Nigeria’s finishing proved decisive as the Super Eagles advanced to a semi-final showdown with hosts Morocco. However, their victory was tempered by Wilfred Ndidi’s yellow card, which rules the captain out suspended clash.
