‘I was just trying to protect my players from injustice,’ Pape Thiaw explains his decision during the chaotic final of the 2025 AFCON
The Senegal national team coach looks back on the dramatic 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Morocco. The match was marred by chaos due to controversial decisions by the referee.
The Senegalese players left the pitch on the orders of their coach after a goal was disallowed earlier in the game and Morocco was awarded a penalty shortly afterwards. However, the Lions of Teranga resumed the match and went on to win the final.
These events have been the subject of much discussion and debate. But a few days after Senegal's victory, coach Pape Thiaw broke his silence.
"We had an exceptional tournament with magnificent organisation, which unfortunately ended dramatically. It was never my intention to go against the principles of the game I love so much. I was just trying to protect my players from injustice. What some will see as a violation of the rules is nothing more than an emotional reaction to the unfairness of the situation. After consultation, we decided to resume the match and go on to win this trophy for you," said Pape Thiaw before apologising to those he may have offended.
‘I apologise if I have hurt anyone, but football lovers will understand that emotion is an integral part of the sport.’
