"I played with depression for a year and a half," admits Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo
Barcelona captain Ronald Araújo has broken his silence, opening up about his battle for mental well-being.
Details: In an exclusive interview with Mundo Deportivo, the Uruguayan defender revealed that he was in a critical state for a long time, hiding it from those around him to maintain the image of a strong player.
“For a year and a half, I lived with anxiety disorder, which developed into depression. And I kept playing in that state,” said Araújo.
According to the player, he felt he had "lost himself" not only on the pitch but also in his personal life. The breaking point came after a red card in the match against Chelsea in London on November 25: it was then that Ronald realized he could no longer cope alone and needed to ask for help.
Araújo emphasized that his story should help others see footballers as people first and foremost.
“We are not just about money and fame. We suffer too. I’m the type who is used to keeping everything inside, but it’s important to raise your hand in time and admit: something is happening to me, I need professionals,” the defender said.
After a forced break and working with psychologists, Ronald returned to the squad, and even scored a goal in the match against Albacete.
Reminder: Raphinha will not help Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semi-final against Atletico.
