"I almost fainted!" Alex Ferguson reveals story behind £630,000 horse purchase
Legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is enjoying his retirement by indulging in his passion for horse racing, even buying his own racehorse. He shared the details of this extravagant purchase in an interview with At The Races.
“Caldwell Potter is the one who really took my breath away. He was up for sale in Ireland and John said 'we may have to go to 600,000 euros' and at that point I fainted. Then he says 'it's gone to 700,000' and he asked if I wanted to stay in. I said, 'John, you've taken us this bloody far, carry on!’”
Despite the hefty price tag, the horse has already started paying dividends, having won a race last week. While it will take considerable time to recoup the investment, it seems Ferguson finds the thrill of competition far more rewarding than the financial returns.
Remarkably, Ferguson and his partners later broke their own record, purchasing another horse for £660,000. Clearly, horse racing holds a special place in Sir Alex’s heart!
